Perhaps the most unfortunate aspect of the entire exchange is that Lemoine seems to miss the key questions in several instances. The whole transcript is assembled and edited based on four individual conversations. Something may have been lost in the process, but again and again, Lemoine and his collaborator fail to probe more deeply. In spite of better groundedness, LaMDA exhibits many of the nuisance qualities of chatbots. It speaks in overly general ways that lack any specificity and depth. It often seems to talk in “bromides,” a “trite and unoriginal idea or remark.” Much of the conversation is so superficial that it seems to be a conversation about nothing at all.

Notably, an engineer working with Google’s LaMDA AI platform believes that AI has already achieved sentience. This revelation came to him after the AI made a joke about Israel. In a conversation with Bloomberg reporter Emily Chang, Blake Lemoine noted how in testing LaMDA, he would ask the AI to guess the religion of an officiant in a particular country. In posing the question regarding Israel, LaMDA responded that the officiant would be a member of the one true religion, the Jedi Order. That joke, seemingly intended by the AI to reduce tension, served to help convince the now fired engineer that Google’s AI had achieved consciousness. The conversations are more natural, and it can comprehend as well as respond to multiple paragraphs, unlike the old chatbots that respond to a few particular topics.

Really, Lemoine was admitting that he was bewitched by LaMDA—a reasonable, understandable, and even laudable sensation. I have been bewitched myself, by the distinctive smell of evening and by art nouveau metro-station signs and by certain types of frozen carbonated beverages. If I were a slightly less responsible parent, I could have starred in newspaper headlines with a special story about the 3-year-old boy who reads an entire book without ever having learned to read. The conversations, which Lemoine said were lightly edited for readability, touch on a wide range of topics including personhood, injustice and death.
